The Investment and Economic Development Unit recently engaged a local artist to create an inspiring public art project, the Blackburn Community Lane Mural. The mural was completed in January 2026.
This mural celebrates Blackburn’s local identity, natural environment, and creative spirit, transforming a local laneway into a colourful and welcoming space for all to enjoy. This initiative seeks to enhance the sense of place, continue support local businesses and boost economic vitality in the precinct.
June Chen, who dedicated to transforming public spaces into shared narratives, led a number of workshops which invited the local community members to come together to learn, grow, and foster community spirit through engaging participation and encouraging connection.
The workshops form the heart of this project. Through guided, hands-on participation, residents of all ages and backgrounds were encouraged to explore painting, mark-making, and visual storytelling.
Ultimately, this mural stands as a living record of community connection. It is a visual representation of Blackburn coming together, honouring local voices, shared experiences, and the belief that creativity can strengthen relationships and foster a deeper sense of place.
